Development And Validition Of The Chinese Version Of The Adult Epilepsy Self-Management Scale(C-ESMS)in West China

Objective: 1.To develop and validate the Epilepsy Self-Management Scale(ESMS)for Chinese people with epilepsy(PWE)by standardized compilation.2.The Chinese version of adult epilepsy self-management scale with good reliability and validity was used to evaluate the self-management level of adult epilepsy patients in western China,and the related factors affecting the scale score were analyzed.Methods : 1.On the basis of the English version of ESEM,the standard translation procedure was used to set up the original version of Chinese ESMS.A consecutive cohort of PWE from Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital was recruited randomly.The following data were collected: 1)basic demographic data,2)disease-related data,3)Chinese version of self-management scale for adult epilepsy patients.The Standard translation procedure,Project analysis,Exploratory factor analysis,Confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha were applied to assess Validity and Reliability.2.A cohort of The patient with epilepsy were randomly recruited from the Epilepsy Center of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital to finish The Chinese version of adult epilepsy self-management scale with good reliability and validity.The self-management level of adult epilepsy patients was evaluated,and the relevant factors affecting the scale score were analyzed.Results: 1.400 people with epilepsy(PWE)completed the Chinese ESMS,out of which,394(98.5%)scales were effective.After Project analysis and Exploratory factor analysis,three items from the dimension ofInformation-Management were removed,one item was removed from Safety-Management.The number of entries in remaining dimension(including Medication-Management,Seizures-Management,Lifestyle-Management)is the same as the source scale.Five factor was extracted,together they explained51.24% of the variance of the data and the factor load of each item was0.446-0.843.Confirmatory factor analysis(CFA)showed X2/df was 1.371,GFI was 0.833,AGFI was 0.806,RMSEA was 0.044,CFI was 0.925,IFI was 0.927.The Cronbach’s alpha of total scale was 0.848,and each dimension was0.784-0.845.2.335 adult patients with epilepsy were recruited to finish The Chinese version of Epilepsy self-management,out of which,327(97.6%)scales were effective.The score of adult PWE in western China was 122.43±12.5.Univariate analysis showed that the scores was no statistically different among different ages,genders,educational levels,employment status,residence,marital status,types of seizures,frequency of seizures,and number of antiepileptic drug.The scores in different duration was statistically different(P< 0.05).Conclusion: 1.Chinese version of ESMS(C-ESMS)including 34 items and five dimensions,was proved of good reliability and validity for adult PWE in western China.2.The Chinese version of ESMS(C-ESMS)of adult PWE in western China was 122.43±12.5.The longer the duration,the higher the self-management level of patients with epilepsy.
