| Objective: Deaths due to cardiovascular disease are on the rise, and hypertension is the first manifestation of cardiovascular disease.Pulse wave velocity(PWV)is becoming an increasingly important indicator of arterial stiffness.Few studies have examined the relationship between subtypes of hypertension and PWV.We investigated this association in different ethnic groups. Methods:We divided14618 participants(Han,5757;Uyghur,4767;and Kazakh,4094)into hypertensive groups: normal blood pressure(7948),isolated systolic hypertension(ISH)(1683),isolated diastolic hypertension(IDH)(1186),and systolic diastolic hypertension(SDH)(3062).Participants were randomly selected from the Cardiovascular Risk Survey of seven cities in Xinjiang,China.A standard questionnaire, physical examination, and biochemical test were administered. Results:The overall average PWV was 1530.47±396.47 cm/s,which gradually increased with age.Kazakh participants(1556.42±403.58 cm/s)had a higher PWV than Han(1525.779±407.85 cm/s)and Uygur participants(1513.66±373.97 cm/s).Average PWV values of the normal blood pressure,ISH,IDH,and SDH groups were 1361.010±255.28 cm/s,1739.254±376.407 cm/s,1495.378±285.476 cm/s,and 1883.1378±475.341 cm/s,respectively.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed different risk factors for abnormal PWV in different ethnicities.Associations between abnormal PWV and different subtypes of hypertension within different ethnic backgrounds were different.Using the Han participants as a reference(lowest PWV),risks of arterial stiffness in Uygur and Kazakh participants were 0.19-fold(odds ratio [OR]=1.190,95% confidence interval [CI] 1.069–1.325)and 0.225-fold(OR=1.225,95% CI 1.091–1.375),respectively.IDH(OR=2.452,95% CI: 2.128–2.825),SDH(OR=14.151,95% CI: 12.272–16.317),and ISH(OR=6.678,95% CI: 5.705–7.817)were influencing factors of arterial stiffness. Conclusion: There was an ethnic difference in the prevalence of abnormal PWV in Xinjiang. The value of PWV ranked from high to low with SDH,ISH,IDH,and NBP(P<0.05).Participants with different ethnic background had different sets of risk factors for abnormal PWV. |
