Purposes: The large scale questionnaire survey was to undertaken to explore the prevalence,cause,severity,treatment and impact of chronic pain in Zhangjiakou zone,and to provide substantial evidence of the necessary to regulate local management of chronic pain,which would be of great significance to citizen improving their quality of life.Methods: The research involved two projects.The first project was to distribute a questionnaire on chronic pain among citizens residing in Zhangjiakou city,Kangbao county,Chongli county,Yangyuan county,Wanquan county and Huailai county.The second project was a retrospective analysis of clinical databases in three pain clinics.The descriptive statistics include the characteristics of participants,the quality of their social and working lives,as well as the level of depression related to pain.Results: The 1863 random questionnaires were delivered randomly,1628 available questionnaires were taken back.A total of 2154 patients visiting to three pain clinics were initially involved in the study,27 out of 2154 patients refused to take part in,46 out of 2154 patients did not meet the inclusion criteria,thus 2081 patients were included in the study.1.The observed prevalence of chronic pain is 32.7% in Zhangjiakou zone,the prevalence of chronic pain among women over 65 years of age is more than 63%.The incidence of chronic pain is correlated significantly with gender,age,significantly.2.Main body location of local citizens are knee,back and neck,and the percentage is 30.8%,18.5% and 16.9%,respectively.3.Chronic musculoskeletal pain,Chronic neuropathic pain,Chronic headache and orofacial pain,and chronic cancer pain are the main causes of pain,incidence of these diseases is 49.4%,17.9%,15.1%,and 13.8%,respectively.4.Anxiety,depression and chronic pain are significantly correlated,R=0.89、0.88.5.76.3% of respondents have a deficient perception of pain clinics.Conclusions:1.The prevalence in Zhangjiakou zone was documented to be 30% in our study,which is contributed to local cultural background and geographical factors.The incidence increases with aging,female appears to be more likely to suffer from chronic pain than male,and the prevalence was 63% among woman aged over 65 years.2.The questionnaire survey shows the most commonly reported body location of local citizens are knee,back and neck.Knee-pain caused by Osteoarthritis is most frequently diagnosed in local pain clinics.3.The severity of chronic pain relates to depression,and the sufferers can benefit from antidepressant or antianxiety medications.4.Chronic musculoskeletal pain and Chronic neuropathic pain are the main factors in the pain clinic in this region.The lack of adequate public awareness of pain medicine is an important factor restricting the development of pain medicine in this region,which suggests that publicity should be strengthened and self-diagnosis and treatment should be improved.
