Objective With the development of society, people pay more and more attention to self-healthy care, more and more people focus on their visual quality. This paper shows purpose to investigate the visual quality of the early stage cataract patients by using visual function(VF)and quality of life(QOL)questionnaires, contrast sensitivity(CS),contrast visual acuity(CVA),objective scattering index(OSI)and modulation transfer function cutoff frequency(MTF cut off). Methods Prospective study has been performed.A total of 70 cataract patients(140 eyes)and 70 normal participates(140 eyes)as controls with matched age and sexual have been enrolled from July 2016 to Dec 2017,who were diagnosed early cataract in the First Affiliated Hospital of ChongQing Medical University,Ophthalmology Department, and BCVA≥0.6.VF and QOL questionnaires,CS testing(low, medium and high frequency)and different CVA testing have been investigated,OSI and MTF Cutoff measured by optical quality analysis System II(OQASII),and compared with control group. Results The scores of VF and QOL questionnaires scores of cataractsgroup were 71.37±5.54 and 88.38±5.07 respectively, the scores of VF and QOL questionnaires of control group were 87.38±3.79 and 94.82±2.84,the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P<0.05).The average CVA(50%,35%,25%)of cataracts group were 0.48±0.15,0.37±0.11,0.25±0.09,lower than that of control group(the average 50%,35%,25% CVA were 0.83±0.10,0.79±0.10,0.70±0.12,P < 0.05);the average CVA(100%)of cataracts group was 0.87±0.11,and the average CVA(100%)of control group was 0.92±0.11,there were no differences between two groups. The average medium frequency(6 cpd)CS of cataracts group was 45.03±52.04,the average high frequency(12 cpd and18 cpd)CS of cataracts group were 3.43±3.75,0.00±0.00,lower than that of control group [the average medium(6 cpd)and high frequency(12 cpd and 18 cpd)CS of control group were 110.37±42.51,28.51±17.63,9.67±5.22,P<0.05].As for the low frequency(3 cpd)CS,there were no differences between the two groups. The average OSI of cataracts group was 1.79±1.16,lower than that of control group(the average OSI was0.60±0.32);the average MTF Cut off of cataracts group was 24.61±9.46,lower than control group(the average MTF cut off was 38.79±6.11).Conclusion(1)VF,QOL questionnaire scores,as well as CS,CVA and OSI,MTF cut off value showed obviously abnormal in early stage cataract patients.(2)It was not possible to evaluate the visual quality of early stage cataract patients with simple visual acuity test, and could not bethe only indicator of the visual quality evaluation of early cataract.(3)The VF,QOL questionnaire,CS,CVA,OSI and MTF cut off value would reflect the visual function loss of the early stage cataract patients which can’t identify by simple visual acuity test.A comprehensive and systematic visual quality assessment of early cataract patients with obvious clinical symptoms can guide the timing of early cataract surgery.
