Objective To evaluate the early results of surgical containment in the treatment of lateral pillar group-C Perthes disease. Methods Twenty-five Patients(twenty-six hips)who underwent surgical containment related to lateral pillar group-C Perthes disease in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between April 2011 and April2016 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients was divided into the younger group(≤8 years old)and the elder group(> 8 years old). And the lateral centre-edge angle(LCEA),acetabular index(AI)and acetabular head index(AHI)were compared between the preoperative and the final follow-up.At the final follow-up,clinical outcome was determined with the Mckay classification, and radiographic outcome was determined with the modified Stulberg classification. Results Twenty-five Patients(twenty-six hips)were followed up for anaverage of 31 months(range 25 to 75 months). At the final follow-up,the LCEA,AI and AHI were 33.72±6.25°,9.47±4.98° and 88.22±8.17% respectively. It obtained obviously improvement, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).According to Mckay classification,77% of patients had satisfactory results.According to the modified Stulberg classification,80.8% of patients had satisfactory results. The satisfactory rate of the young group(≤8years old)and old group(>8 years old)was 82.4% and 77.8% respectively, but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusions Surgical containment can improve the acetabular coverage, the matching relationship between the head and the acetabulum and the activity of the hip joint in lateral pillar group-C Perthes patients and the early results is effective.Active surgical containment should be performed in the early stage for the older group-C patients(>8 years old).
