Objective:To research the sound image characteristics of the iliotibial band at the lateral femoral epicondyle and tibial tubercle sites of healthy youth by high-frequency ultrasound.Measure the thickness of the iliotibial band in these two sites. To explore the diagnostic value of high-frequency ultrasound in iliotibial band injury and provide objective basis for clinical application. Methods: A total of 200 iliotibial bands of 100 healthy young volunteers(50 males and 50 females)were examined by high-frequency ultrasound. The thickness of iliotibial band was measured at two sites which the lateral femoral epicondyle and 0.5 cm above the tibial tubercle. The thickness of iliotibial band at the two sites was measured three times and the mean value was taken.SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. Results: Firstly, the sound image characteristics of iliotibial band at the the lateral femoral epicondyle and tibial tubercle of healthy youth by high-frequency ultrasound might be mainly manifested as follows: the iliotibial band was a thin hyperechoic band with a clear boundary and a clear linear muscular membrane of strong echo,no blood flow signal was detected in all iliotibial bands.Secondly, thethickness ofbilateral iliotibial band at the lateral femoral epicondyle of the 50 males [1.25±0.12mm(right)vs 1.26±0.12mm(left),(P>0.05)] and the thickness of iliotibial band at the0.5 cm above the tibial tubercle[2.07±0.26mm(right)vs 2.08±0.25mm(left),(P>0.05)] also had no statistical significance.Thethickness ofbilateral iliotibial band at the lateral femoral epicondyle of the 50 females [1.26±0.15mm(right)vs 1.27±0.15mm(left),(P>0.05)] and the thickness of iliotibial band at the0.5 cm above the tibial tubercle[2.16±0.33mm(right)vs 2.17±0.33mm(left),(P>0.05)] also had no statistical significance. We found that there was no significant difference in the thickness of iliotibial band between the males and females groups(P>0.05).We did not detect any correlation between iliotibial band thickness and the height or weight of 100 volunteers(P>0.05).In addition, the thickness of the iliotibial band at the lateral femoral epicondyle of healthy youthdid not exceed1.49 mm,and the thickness of the iliotibial band at the tibial tubercle did not exceed 2.60 mm.Conclusions: The technology of high-frequency ultrasound can clearly display the form, structure and echo of iliotibial band, and can measure the thickness of the iliotibial band accurately and objectively.Furthermore,it can provide objective basis for clinical diagnosis and application of iliotibial band injury disease. |
