Objective Hip fractures, including cervical or trochanteric hip fractures, are always associated with a high postoperative mortality, while predictors of mortality after hip fracture have been widely studied, the preoperative predictors of mortality have been limited. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. Methods We took data for elder people with a hip fracture between April 1,2008,and Dec 31,2014,from our hospital. We assessed mortality and the role of patient and treatment factors by Cox proportional hazards models.Potential risk factors for hip fracture morality included age, gender, nutritional status, anemia, surgery,an increased time interval between injury and surgery, comorbidities and the American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA)score of patients. The population attributable risk proportion of death to each significant factor was estimated.Findings 544 patients encountered hip fractures during seven years.146 patients died after the fracture with a mortality about 26.84% which stay unchanged through these years, even after adjustment for age, sex, and comorbidity. The emergence of the male gender, older age,low serum albumin, and without surgical intervention were associated with higher mortality.Modifiable perioperative risk factors, including surgical approach and ASA score, were not associated with mortality.
