Purpose With the aging of the population increasing, the number of edentulous patients will continue to increase in the future. The emergence of dental implants provides a new treatment option for edentulous patients.Due to its economy, convenience and small trauma, the demand for implant overdentures will continue to increase. However, the Locator attachment system is more and more widely used clinically due to its small size, comfortable and convenient use. This retrospective study evaluated the long-term reliability of maxillary or mandibular implant overdentures retained by the Locator attachment system. Methods 20 cases of edentulous patients are selected from January 2012 to December 2013 in Stomatology Dental Implant Center of Anhui Medical University, who restored by implant overdenture and have been using complete denture for at least one year.Eight cases were selected for Maxillary edentulous and 12 cases for mandibular edentulous. The minimum age of the subjects was 55 years and the maximum was 74 years.Patients(informed consent)were informed they would have 4 or 2 implants implanted in either their maxilla or mandible, and the other jaw remained as complete denture, with informed consent and agreement on signing the implant protocol.Among them, implant distribution: 4 implants were implanted in the maxillary region of 13,23,15 and 25,and 2 implants were implanted in the mandibular region of 33 and 43.By comparing the two groups of modified plaque index(m PLI),bleeding on probing(BOP),peri-implant probing depth(PPD),marginal bone loss(MBL)and patient satisfaction,we evaluated the 3 years clinical effect of implant-retained Locator overdenture. Results The survival rates were 100%.After 3 years of loading, soft tissue condition around the implant was good. There was no significant difference between the two groups in modified plaque index(m PLI),bleeding on probing(BOP),peri-implant probing depth(PPD).There was no significant difference in marginal bone loss between the two groups after 3 years. The patient satisfaction in both groups was significantly improved compared with that before loading, with no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion In this 3-year clinical retrospective study,Implant-supported Locator overdenture have superior treatment outcomes, high implant survival rates, limited marginal bone loss, good peri-implant soft tissue conditions and good patient satisfaction. For edentulous patients,Implant-supported Locator overdenture is a very reliable rehabilitation way.
