Spring maize is one of the important crops in the irrigation area of Mu Us Sandy Land in northwest China.Water shortage is an important factor limiting the cultivation of spring maize in this area.Unreasonable irrigation methods cause the inefficient consumption of fresh water resources, what is more, lead to the contradiction increase of water use in social production and the consequences of ecological water pollution. In order to achieve sustainable use of water resources and develop water-saving irrigated agriculture,it is necessary to grasp the growth characteristics of yield formation and water demand laws of spring maize and the relations among them, and promote appropriate water-saving irrigation techniques. In this paper, the field tests were conducted to obtain the related parameter data.On the basis of analyzing the soil water distribution characteristics in the root zone, the stem flow rate of spring maize, evapotranspiration, growth characteristics and yield formation, the soil water balance in the field, the water requirement of spring maize and Water use efficiency were studied. The field experiment in this study set up four irrigation treatments:T1?40%ET0?,T2?60%ET0?,T3?80%ET0?,T4?100%ET0?,and T5?120%ET0?.The main conclusions are as follows:?1?The change of soil moisture content in the field is the result of the combined effects of evapotranspiration, rainfall, irrigation and crop growth. The soil moisture content of each irrigation treatment in the two growing seasons is consistent. The jointing stage, the tasseling stage and the filling stage are the key periods of spring water demand.?2?At the end of the growth period, the soil water storage capacity of 0 to 80 cm from T1 to T5 was increased by 65 mm,decreased by 9.5 mm,decreased by 6.8 mm,and increased by 91.7 mm,respectively. The evapotranspiration of spring maize in the whole growth period was between 333.6 mm and 438.3 mm.Under the conditions of the test area, the low irrigation amount made the interaction between water and groundwater in the root zone higher, and the high irrigation amount would lead to the higher amount of water leakage in the bottom of root zone.?3?The plant height, stem diameter and leaf area index of spring maize were the highest in jointing and tasseling stages, and the plant height of spring maize plants was sensitive to soil moisture conditions, and the irrigation and water content were lower. There is a significant difference in the above indicators compared to a relatively sufficient treatment.?4?The trend of water demand intensity and water demand modulus in the whole growth period was consistent, and both showed an increase from the seedling stage to the tasseling period, and the tasseling period to the waxy stage decreased. The quadratic curve can be used to describe the relationship between spring maize yield and water consumption, water use efficiency and water consumption. The single 90%ET0 drip irrigation can take into account the yield and water use efficiency goals.
