The root and soul of a city is its unique historical culture. With the increasing improvement and enrichment of people's material life, people gradually attach growing importance to traditional culture. The historical district is an expression of the unique historical culture of a city, which reflects the various forms of the city in the long history and shows the local conditions and customs in each historical stage. At present, the reconstruction of historical blocks in China is still in the stage of development and improvement. The restoration of many historical districts focuses more on the exterior appearance while neglecting the exploration of the traditional culture represented therein, which result in the restorations that only exhibit the shape but not the spirit.Upon the analysis of cultural backgrounds of the Qianmen Street in Beijing,Tianzifang Alley in Shanghai and Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu, this paper highlights the important value of traditional culture in reconstructing the historical district. This paper will take Nanchang Wanshou Palace historical and cultural blocks renovation project as an example, refining and analyzing the traditional culture elements and design methods applied in the process of renovation, and proposing strategies that will shape the traditional and cultural characteristics in the project and incorporate traditional cultural elements and contemporary design in a harmonious manner.History and modernity are not necessarily conflicted. The important thing is to find a proper way to combine the two,and the traditional culture can play the trick of"glue".Chinese traditional culture is extensive and profound, with a long history. The greatest value of the historic district is to vividly display the cultural characteristics of different ages it has experienced. The mottled wall and the tiles and bricks are symbols of a city, just like a business card, even if they do not convey any utterance. Therefore,in the renovation design,it is necessary to fully understand and excavate the unique culture of each historical district, and integrate it with the overall planning of urban construction. The historic district can only be revitalized through the organic combination of traditional culture and contemporary architecture.
