In our modern society with scarce and precious land,buildings in cities tends to be high-rise ones,while demand on green space have been growing in recent years with the improvement of material and cultural level.Walls on buildings offer the biggest possible greening areas in buildings that could be utilized while the application of green walls to the high-rise buildings could maximize the green quantities in cities,restore the existing pattern of urban buildings to a natural form and relieve the pressure on demand on green spaces in cities as well.The paper analysizes the application of green wall on high-rise residential buildings,the current problems and its positive implications.Feasibility of applying green wall to high-rise residential buildings is investigated.A more effective way of applying this technology on high-rise residential buildings are illustrated.Technologies are divided into two types,namely flat planting and non-flat planting based on the pattern of planting of the green walls.A brief explanation on the application,technological difficulties and solutions of these two technologies to high-rise residential buildings is given.Through factor analysis of the requirement of the application of green wall technologies,internal and external factors of these technologies are explained,with internal factors such as design influence factors,appearance presentation,technology measures etc.Impact of environmental factors,architecture factors,material,and plants selection on high-rise buildings green walls has been analyzed.Plants selection and cultivate base has been categorized based on the seven patterns of green walls.Load,anticorrosive and moisture proof,safety concerns and maintenance design and management is illustrated in technology factors.Those that need special consideration for the green wall design of the high-rise residential buildings are identified,which are drainage of green walls,separate maintenance channels and irrigation and lighting of the green walls with cooperation from the disciplines of water supply & drainage and electrical.Other factors such as insect prevention should also be considered in architectural design of green walls.External factors include government support,relative regulations and the direction of the future development.The prospect for future development like new technologies from other disciplines could also catalyze a great-leap-forward development of green walls on buildings,such as the green buildings,and other building materials.From technological perspective,wall greening could be utilized in high-rise residential buildings,but with some technical difficulties.The promotion of this application requires regulation from government policy,codes and standards of the industry and also advertising.If all those problems could be solved,green walls will be more extensively utilized in the high-rise residential buildings,producing more positive landscape,ecological and social effect.
