BackgroundIn recent years, people are living with higher pressure, because of the faster living and working pace, more competition, higher house price, which lead to more serious mental health problems especially depression in the large city. Depression is a kind of mood disorder featured by long lasting obvious depressed mood and lack of interest, it is a common illness which can cause serious damage to personal social function even to suicide, meanwhile it can cause serious economical burden for the society.At present, the research for mental heath are mainly focus on undergraduate, middle school student and the aged people, but it is not enough for company staff who are the main builder of social wealth and economic development, and also require more care.Therefore, research for mental heath of company staff combined with traditional chinese medicine (hereinafter referred to as the TCM) preventive treatment of disease philosophy according to the psychology characteristic of the company staff group, early identification of the depressive state and early intervention which are important to improve the mental health of company staff are meaningful to the society progress and development.ObjectiveThis research mainly focuses on mental health evaluation of the company staff in Beijing area by using mental scales. In order to explore the social and psychological factor leading to depression, mental scales are analyzed, personality of depressed staff are evaluated. Finally, provide some suggestions and countermeasures to help the company department and staff to avoid or reduce the high risks of psychological problems and depression tendency, then the company staff mental health can be protected.Methods590company staffs from different trades in Beijing area were investigated during Sep.2010to Dec.2011. All company staff were accessed by the following:"life quality" by the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (hereinafter referred to as the WHOQOL-BREF)."depressive symptom" by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (hereinafter referred to as the CES-D),"negative life event occurrence" by the Life Event Scale (hereinafter referred to as the LES) and "personality" by the Big Five Personality Inventory (hereinafter referred to as the NEO-FFI).Results1The prevalence of depressive symptom in403company staff was27.54%. which included 37.84%possible depressive symptom,29.73%definite depressive symptom and32.43%severe depressive symptom.2Comparative analysis of the prevalence of depressive symptom and CES-D scores in different subtypes:there were significant differences among different age, marital status, doing physical exercise and having self health care (P<0.05), of which the group who were20to29years old, unmarried, not participating in physical exercise, not having self health care got higher scores and prevalence of depressive symptom; There were no significant statistical difference among different gender, income, degrees of education, smoking, drinking and birthplace (P>0.05).3Comparing the depressed staff and the normal staff, there were significant differences in the scores of WHOQOL-BREF, LES, negative events, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism (P<0.05), of which the depressed got high scores in LES, negative events and emotional stability, less scores in WHOQOL-BREF, conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness.4Comparing different depression levels of company staff, there were significant differences in the scores of WHOQOL-BREF, general evaluation of the life quality, physiological domain, psychological domain (P<0.05), of which the possible depressive symptom group got highest scores of WHOQOL-BREF, psychological domain; the definite depressive symptom group got highest scores of general evaluation of the life quality; there were no significant differences in scores of LES, negative events (P>0.05).5Comparative analysis of WHOQOL-BREF scores in different subtypes:different income groups showed significant difference in score of general evaluation of the life quality(P<0.05), in which the income more than6000yuan got the highest score, the income less than3000yuan got the lowest one; different marital status groups showed significant differences in scores of WHOQOL-BREF, physiological domain, psychological domain and environmental domain (P<0.05), married group got higher scores than unmarried group; there were no significant differences in scores of WIIOQOL-BREF between different degrees of education and birthplace (P>0.05).6The highest frequency events of company staff were:high working and studying stress (41.44%), not satisfied with the working (34.99%), falling in love or being engaged to someone (32.75%). having difficulties in housing (27.79%), getting a job (26.30%); there was significant difference in LES scores between different age groups (P<0.05),20-29year-old group got highest score; there were no significant differences in LES scores among different gander and married status (P>0.05).7CES-D scores showed significant negative correlation with WHOQOL-BREF and all dimensions scores (P<0.05), the higher CES-D scores, the higher WHOQOL-BREF and its dimensions scores, CES-D scores were highest associated with physiological domain, psychological domain scores.8LES scores showed significant negative correlation with WHOQOL-BREF and its dimensions scores (P<0.05), highest associated with environment domain and general health evaluation scores.9There were significant negative correlations among negative family events with general evaluation of life quality and health, physiological, psychological, environment domain (P<0.05), and there had no correlation between negative family events and social relationship domain (P>0.05); Negative working events had significant negative correlations with WHOQOL-BREF and its dimensions scores (P<0.05), highest associated with physiological and psychological domain scores; Negative social communication events had significant negative correlations with general evaluation of health, psychological and social domain scores of WHOQOL-BREF scale (P<0.05), it had no correlations with other domains scores of WHOQOL-BREF scale (P>0.05), highest associated with general evaluation of health scores.10Scores of negative events had a significant positive correlation with scores of CES-D (P<0.05), negative working events were highest associated with depressive symptoms of company staff.11There was a significant positive correlation between emotional stability and CES-D scores, and significant negative correlation among conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, openness of NEO-FFI with CES-D scores (P<0.05), emotional stability were highest associated with the depressive symptoms of company staff.Conclusion1The prevalence of depressive symptom in company staff from Beijing area is higher than undergraduates and migrant workers. They require more care for their mental health.2It is closely correlated among depressive symptoms with age, marital status, doing physical exercise, having self health care, negative life events, negative working events, emotional stability, conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness. There were correlations among life quality of company staff with income, marital status, negative life events and depressive symptoms. Company staffs of different age have different life events.3The companies, staff, family and the society should take appropriate measures to avoid or reduce the high risks of psychological problems and depression tendency, then the company staff mental health can be protected. |
