A Study Of The National Image Of The Philippines Projected By The Global Times (2006.7-2016.6)

The image of the country is based on the subjective perception and evaluation of the objective strength of a country in the process of interaction.The study of national images has become a research trend in the academic field recently.However,there is not much research on the national image of Philippines.As a developing country,the Philippines is a major member of the association of southeast Asian nations,is also one of Asia Pacific economic cooperation organization member states.Yet the relations between these two countries have gone through ups and downs for quite a long period of time and they even got strained for a time due to the South China Sea issue.Therefore,it is of great importance to conduct a study on the national image of Philippines portrayed by China's mainstream media.Moreover,such a study is beneficial for the enhancement of the friendly exchanges between the two countries.This thesis resorts to content analysis to categorize and summarize the reports in ten years of Global Times between July 2006 and June 2016.It is shown that Global Times holds a positive attitude towards China's achievements in economy.The reports about the Philippines is relatively more and uneven distributed.With regards to the content,most reports focus on the diplomatic affairs and the others mainly concern economy,domestic affairs,cultural and social issues.Among the diplomatic coverage,the negative reports mostly concentrate on territorial disputes between China and the Philippines.After research,I summarized the the national image of the Philippines by the Global Times.The Philippine domestic political is a chaos.They made many territorial disputes and disturbances.The PhilippinePeople in Philippine face serious hidden danger.This is both the objective conditions of the Philippines and the embodiment of the mass media to serve the interests of the state.
