The elastic optical network(EON)is gradually replacing the traditional wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical network due to its flexibility in bandwidth allocation and efficiency of network resource utilization. For an EON,traffic grooming plays an important role in efficiently utilizing network resources.Meanwhile, network protection is indispensable to ensure network reliability. This thesis focuses on optimizing network resource utilization through integrating the techniques of cross-layer traffic grooming and network protection for the EON.Considering the severe mismatch between the bandwidths of user applications and optical channels in an EON,and the importance of network survivability for a broadband optical network,we look into multi-layer survivable traffic grooming for IP over EON.We introduce some basic concepts on multi-layer protection with traffic grooming, which include 1)integrated and overlay protection,2)mixed and dedicated channel traffic grooming based on shared backup path protection(SBPP),and 3)flow splitting based traffic grooming. We have an in-depth exploration on the survivable traffic grooming technique and propose various efficient grooming approaches for IP over EON.Extensive simulation studies are performed to verify the efficiency of the proposal schemes. As a result, the following key observations are made: 1)Integrated protection is superior to the Overlay protection in network resource utilization;2)mixed channel scheme is superior to dedicated one in improving network resource utilization and reducing the hardware cost;3)the flow splitting traffic grooming scheme can improve the utilization of network spectrum resources.
