Liquid crystal display has been widely applied on computer monitors and TVs owing to the continuous improvement in its image quality.However,the display with a narrow viewing angle is needed for personal privacy and security.In this article,the viewing angle controllable nematic liquid crystal display has been designed through simulation calculation.In the first chapter,the compensated principle of viewing angle is introduced,and several compensation methods for different display modes are introduced.With the development of the wide viewing angle display mode and compensation film,the display effects of liquid crystal display,such as the wide viewing angle and high contrast ratio,were improved to fit people's requirement.With the improvement of people's living quality,these features cannot be satisfied for privacy protection requirement.So the viewing angle controllable liquid crystal display is proposed.We summarized some methods for viewing angle controllable,including dual cell method,sub-pixel method,and temperature-dependent birefringence method.And the advantages and disadvantages for these methods were summarized,in order to retain the advantages and get rid of the disadvantages of these methods for finding a more perfect way to control the viewing angle.In the second chapter,we demonstrate a continuous viewing angle controllable pattern vertical alignment LCD(PVA-LCD).By using new electrode structure and compensation methods,this new method makes the transmittance of the wide and narrow display mode is larger than 90%.For wide viewing angle mode,its viewing angle is same to that of traditional PVA-LCD.For narrow viewing angle mode,the viewing angle changes continuously and uniformly from very wide viewing angle to narrow viewing angle.The new method has completely reached requirement of high performance liquid crystal display.In order to understand the performance of the new method,we study the effect of the size of the rectangle holes on electro-optical properties.In the third chapter,a viewing angle controllable fringe and in-plane switching vertical alignment liquid crystal display(FIS-VALCD)structure has been proposed.In FIS-VALCD without top-common electrode,the electro-optic curve is not smooth for narrow viewing angle display.Adding top common electrode in top substrate and the bias voltage is added on the bottom common electrodes,the electro-optic curve is smooth.This method keeps wide viewing angle,and the narrow viewing angle is more symmetry and uniform,the contrast ratio of normal direction is larger enough.The viewing angle can be continuously changed by controlling the bias voltages on bottom substrate.Additional,the influence of thickness of insulating layer on display effect has been simulated.
