Communication with Taiwan has very special status in the Journalism of modern China. It has practical meanings to peaceful reunification of China. This thesis tries to give an initial study of the theory and history of Communication with Taiwan. From studying on the reports of relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits in the People Daily and the United Daily of Taiwan, this thesis summarize the characteristic and evaluate the effect of the new stage of Communication with Taiwan since2005.The thesis discusses the conceptions related to the Communication with Taiwan; points out the importance of “Communication with Taiwan”rather than “Propaganda to Taiwan”; summarizes three factors that influence the development of mainland's Communication with Taiwan: the mainland Taiwan policy, the mainland media and Taiwan society. By the study of the history of the Communication with Taiwan, the thesis shows that the changes in mainland media is accompanied with the change in these three effect factors mentioned above. It also summarizes five trends of the communication with Taiwan in the past 57 years.Through the comparison and analysis of the reports about Taiwan around 2005 on the People Daily, the thesis shows there are three characteristics of the new stage of Communication with Taiwan since 2005.First, the task of Communication with Taiwan has been opened to more media;second, the coverage of Taiwan has made much progress; third, the mainland has controlled the topic of relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits.By the study of reports on two sides' relationship in the United Daily and the change of the Taiwan public opinion, the thesis also shows the stage is quite effective. The mainland influence the agenda-setting of Taiwan's media; The image of the mainland in Taiwan media is improving;the stereotype on the mainland is evaporating; and the public opinionthat the Taiwanese's demand for better the relationship is toning up.Finally, the thesis summarizes the valuable experience that could be learned from the Communication with Taiwan in 2005, and it also provides suggestion on the Communication with Taiwan in future.
