In recent years, with the development of information technology, an increasing number of cores are integrated on a single chip. At the same time, the amount of information exchange between multi-core is also growing, which requires a more efficient on-chip interconnection.On-chip optical interconnects has been regarded as an enabling way to satisfy the increasing demands of high bandwidth for future generations of chip multiprocessors. Many means have been demonstrated to extend the capacity, such as Wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM) and Time-division multiplexing(TDM). Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is an optional approach for expanding the capacity of a single optical link. MDM uses a multimode optical waveguides so that each eigen-mode is exploited as an independent channel to carry different data while all the modes have the same operation wavelength, which means MDM do not need additional light sources and waveguides. The major challenge in MDM on-chip system is that the performance of MDM system is limited by crosstalk. So, multi-input multi-output(MIMO) signal processing is necessary to reduce the influence of noise and improve the performance of MDM system. As a key component in MDM system, mode-(de)multiplexers have attracted significant attention in recent years. This paper analyzes the simulation of the transmission characteristics of mode-(de)multiplexers from the views of both the theoretical principle and the actual process point. Besides, this paper stresses the need of MIMO technology in MDM system. This paper also establishes the transmission model for MDM system on chip. The transmission capacity is discussed. The MIMO equalization algorithms are illustrated in detail, including the algorithm based on training sequence and blind equalization algorithm. And, the applicability of these algorithms are also analyzed. Finally, this paper establishes a simulation system for MDM system on chip with Optisystem and Matlab. The simulation system is based on the combination of the design results for (de)multiplexers and the MIMO technology. It is pointed out that the use of MIMO technology can optimize the transmission quality in the MDM system and reduce the process requirements of device fabrication. The key problems in MDM system such as the signal modulation, different equalization algorithms, waveguide crossing and waveguide bends are also discussed in detail.
