English textbooks play an important role in English teaching.Teachers teach the class according to the content of textbooks and students learn mainly from the textbooks.Therefore,the contentof textbooks is very important to English teaching.The analysis of the contentof the textbooks is beneficial to the English teaching.In the current situation in Chengdu,there are more than 5 sets of primary school English textbooks which are being used.They are PEP Primary English published by People's Education Press,New Standard English published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press,Primary English published by Beijing Normal University,New Notion English published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and Good English which is introduced from Oxford University Press.From the perspective of functional linguistics,we should pay attention to the ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function.Hallidy's Systemic Functional linguistics reveals the systematicness and integrity of language.Ideational function refers to that the languagecan express the experience of people in the real world.And this is the basic function of language.Interpersonal function refers to that the language can express the identity,status,attitude,motivation and judgment of things,participate in social activities andestablish social relations.Textual function refers to the completeness,consistency and cohesion of discourse.Most of the current used primary school textbooks focus on the ideational function of language and ignore the interpersonal function and textual function of language.Based on the above ideas,the author selects two sets of primary school English textbooks for the comparative research.Among them,Primary English published by Beijing Normal University has been widely used in public primary schools in Chengdu.Another set of English textbook is New Notion English published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press which focus on fostering students' culture sense and language thinking.In this thesis,the author did a comparative analysis from the three aspects of textbook content,such as language knowledge,culture information and integrity training.In this paper,the author used the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis,from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics,to analyze the two sets of primary school English textbooks.From the perspective of ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function,the author can analyze whether the language knowledge is presented reasonable in textbooks,whether the textbooks create the suitable context for language learning and whether the text is completed,and can express the potential meaning to students and teachers.The research of this paper has a certain help to the compilation of textbooks.And the textbook writers can modify the textbook through the analysis of two different textbooks.And it can meet the needs of teachers and students better.At the same time,the results of this study can help teachers to design their teaching plan.Teachers can choose reasonable teaching materials based on the situation of the students,and can teach more targeted.
