In recent years, with unceasing reformations in PE curriculum, PE teachers' teaching ability of communication has been receiving attention from more and more PE scholars and front-line PE teachers. Taking sports science and psychology as an entry point, this research makes a preliminary study of the definition, construction and characterization of PE teachers' teaching ability of communication by adopting methods of qualitative research, logical analysis, psychological measurement and mathematical statistics. Based on communication ability theories and qualitative research outcomes, PE teachers' teaching ability of communication inventory is worked out and its reliability and validity are tested. This study aims at laying a solid foundation for further study and quantitative research of PE teachers' teaching ability of communication.The results indicate that:1. Through the definition method of "genus plus specific difference", PE teachers' teaching ability of communication is defined as follows:It is the ability that PE teachers show when communicating with students consciously by virtue of appropriate communication skills in the process of teaching.2. According to qualitative research, PE teachers teaching ability of communication falls into four dimensions:PE teachers' communication skill, occupational accomplishment, communication effectiveness and communication consciousness; 8 secondary observation index:non-verbal communication, speech communication, professional accomplishment, personal accomplishment, classroom atmosphere, student feedback, communication motivation and humanistic care.3. PE teachers' teaching ability of communication inventory has good reliability and validity.4. There exist some differences on PE teachers' teaching ability of communication in the light of demographic variables. In general, PE teachers' communication consciousness comes to the top. In the discrepancy of gender, female PE teachers' occupational accomplishment, communication consciousness and communication effectiveness are significantly higher than those of male PE teachers', however, there is no significant difference between male and female PE teachers' communication skill. In terms of educational attainment, there is no significant difference among PE teachers with bachelor's, master's or doctor's degree. In terms of teaching grade, junior middle school PE teachers' communication consciousness is significantly higher than that of PE teachers' in other grades.
