In recent years,numerous domestically-made animation films have garnered impressive reputation and obtained remarkable box office.Released on July 8,2016,the animation film Big Fish & Begonia was a milestone which broke the box office record.It took twelve years for the director to work from the conceptual phase to the production,describing a romantic story between a girl and a giant fish by the means of various traditional cultural symbols which intend to build up an overhead underwater world.Inspired by Zhuang Zi's Peripateticism,the animation film refers to nearly ten ancient Chinese books.Meanwhile,multiple aspects such as the world outlook,the footage,the character portrayal,the scene setting and so forth all reflect the splendor and connotation of Chinese traditional culture.Regarding the Chinese culture connotation as theory references,this thesis explores the “Yan,Xiang,and Yi” in the film.The “Yan” is the symbolic connotations and expressive characteristics;“Xiang” is the natural characteristics and artificial implication of traditional culture;“Yi” is the research object,aiming to spread the symbolic forms and meanings.Throughout the analysis of traditional culture,it explores the profound connotation the film conveys.According to the research of the “Yan,Xiang and Yi”,the thesis will concentrate on the following three parts.First,through the representative of analysis on the lens and language expressions in the film,the film highlights the symbolic connotations and expressive characteristics of“Yan”.Second,the film generalizes the traditional cultural symbols and segments them into three categories: nature's “Xiang”,including fish,Chinese flowering crabapple,water,and Chinese redness;the artificial “Xiang” includes Hakka Tulou,couplets,dragon and phoenix;characters of “Yi”,mainly include Chinese toon,ponds,and spirit and rat shiva.Third,the plot discusses the implication,that is,the traditional culture of“Yi” from the romantic style,gratitude paying,the “nature and humanity” thought,and the death and rebirth view respectively.Undoubtedly,this film provides tremendous valuable experience for the creation and development of Chinese animation films.This paper discusses from the perspective of “Yan,Xiang,and Yi",hoping to bring some beneficial attempts for contemporary research.
