Drama adaptation,a method of reproducing the novel text, has been on the upsurge. As a unique landscape in contemporary Chinese literature,it produced considerable amounts of adapted works, which has become an indispensable phenomenon in the field of adaptation studies. The thesis adopts text analysis as the research method, drama adaptation of novels about the Culture Revolution as the objects, adaptations of the novels Golden Road,Tongbai Heroes and the like as examples, comparing “hypotext” and “hypertext” in the aspects of themes, narratives and mediums from the perspective of formational environment of adopted works,to investigate characteristics and distinctions of adaptation in different times.Based on the chronological trends of adaptation, the thesis is divided into three chapters.Chapter one compares rural community of “Presbyterianism” revealed by “hypotext” of Golden Road with highly centralized “politicized life” in “hypertext”,arriving at the conclusion that adaptation in the Cultural Revolution period has promotive effect on literary canonization.Chapter two places the emphasis on the analysis of social environment about adaptation in “Convalescence” after 1977.By analyzing the common features presented in the process of simultaneous adaptations about Tongbai Heroes,Misty Capital and The Second Handshake, the author investigates the possibilities of putting "on-the-ground literature" and "underground literature" into the same category in the writing of literary history.Chapter three analyzes narrative features of TV series Tongbai Heroes, explores the function of “kernelization” about “legends” in the process of adapting novels for films, and probes into the loss of literariness in “hypertext” as a result of specific media differences. The author contrasts the differences between “texts” and “scenes” throughout the whole thesis. There are more identity and normality in drama adaptation than the novel itself, which exactly determines rapid manufacture and wide acceptance of TV series as well as films in commodity economy times. However, just due to such invincible popularization, internal implication of novel text and necessary imagination in text reading have been deprived, leading to plain and vacuous trends of mass thoughts.
