The post-apocalyptic films have sprung up since 1950s and developed gradually into matureand distinctive Hollywood genre film. Post-apocalyptic film is a subgenre of science fiction that isconcerned with the end of civilization. The settings are after the end of the world due to differentreasons. Survival and redemption are the prime theme of the films.The creation environment of post-apocalyptic films are closely related to religion culture, timecrises, consumerism and survivalism. The films expressed American frontier myth and desertcluture and uncovered cultural imprints of time crises. By the end of 1991, the cold war ended.However,films that focusing on human's life after apocalypse aren't reducing. Instead, thepost-apocalyptic films in Hollywood are growing rapidly. The causes of the end of the world infilms also change with the development of the times.This paper chooses the post-apocalyptic films in Hollywood since 1990s. It's the first time tostudy the films by using methods of genre research. The paper is divided into four chapters. Thefirst chapter defines the concept of post-apocalyptic films, analyzes the causes and the brief historyof the films; through narrative structure, spatial manifestation, theme expression and character images, the second chapter studies the genre narration of post-apocalyptic films; the third chapterstudies the image world of ruins aesthetics in the post-apocalyptic films. Ruin aesthetics are themajor aesthetic styles and punk styles are the typical features; the fourth chapter discusses thecultural values in the films and their enlightenment.
