A Study Of Translator's Subjectivity From English Versions Of Zhongyong Translated By James Legge?Ku Hungming And Ames & Hall

It is known that translator serves as the subject of translation, who will unconsciously impose their subjectivity on their translated work. Translator's subjectivity has received more and more attention as it deserves in recent translation research. The article focuses on translator's subjectivity in the translated versions of Zhongyong. As one of ancient Chinese classics, research on English versions of Zhongyong has sprung up. This thesis tries to demonstrate the exertion of translator's subjectivity embodied in English versions of Zhongyong including James Legge's Version and Ku Hungming's Version and Roger T. Ames and Hall David's Version on their cultural status, translation thoughts and styles. Hence, this thesis focuses on comparative analysis of English versions of Zhongyong in order to explore the importance of translator's subjectivity.The author finds that James Legge, as the western missionary, he translated Zhongyong into English which is loyal to the original work and rich in Christianity spirit; Ku Hungming is the first Chinese scholar to spread Confucian culture. His translation version of Zhongyong characterizes strong moral ethnical culture by using translation strategies to make westerners understand more accessible so that Chinese culture could take its place in the western world. The American scholars, Roger T. Ames & David Hall, try to explain the ideological connotation of Zhongyong in pure Chinese philosophy for the Rectification of Name for Chinese philosophical culture, which sets a good example for modern philosophical culture research. The author chooses these typical English versions to study on the translation ideas and language styles to explore the translator's subjectivity in order to provide a new perspective for further research.
