Objectve:To compare sleep quality of patients with primary acute angle-closure glaucoma with the healthy subjects and that of patients with priamry chronic angle-closure glaucoma so as to analyze the sleep quality of glaucoma patients and its relationship with the disease. Methods:From April 2016 to December 2016 in the Department of Ophthalmology,The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University,20 inpatients suffering from acute primary acute angle-closure glaucoma were selected for acute glaucoma group, and 15 synchronous inpatients suffering from primary chronic angle-closure glaucoma were for chronic glaucoma group,24 healthy subjects from our hospital medical center were for healthy group.Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)was employed to assess sleep quality in the subjects.PSQI consists of 19self-evaluation and 5 evaluation items. In PSQI,19 individual items generate7 component scores: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency(time needed to fall asleep),sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency(proportion between total sleep time and time in bed),sleep disturbances(i.e.waking up duringnight),use of sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction(difficulty to stay awake during the day). The sum of the scores of the 7 items yields a global score with a possible range of 0–21.The higher the score, the worse the sleep.we used a cutoff score of 7 to consider the existence of sleep disturbances in our current study. All the questionnaires were nameless, and reclaimed on the spot. The inter-group comparison was performed by t test and related tests. Results:All the 20 patients in acute glaucoma group and 15 in the chronic glaucoma group finished the survey and were analyzed in the result.(1)Difference in gender and age:Most of the patients in the acute glaucoma group were female, but there was unobvious difference in gender in the chronic glaucoma group.Patients were mainly aged from 50 to 85 years in the acute glaucoma group, and were from 51 to 89 years in the chronic glaucoma group, and were from 22 to 85 years in the healthy group.(2)Sleep quality:The scores of PSQI in acute glaucoma group were extraordinarily significantly higher than the healthy group(P < 0.05),and significantly higher than those in the chronic glaucoma group(P <0.05).The scores of chronic of chronic glaucoma group were also significantly higher than the healthy group(P < 0.05).The prevalence of sleep disturbances is higher in patients with acute glaucoma group and the chronic glaucoma group than healthy controls(P<0.05).(3)Level of visual field loss and sleep quality:In the chronic glaucoma group, the ratio ofpeople with sleep disorders grew with the augmentation of the visual field impairment, with the differences not being statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusion:Sleep quality declined both in the acute glaucoma group and the chronic glaucoma group compared to healthy controls. The prevalence of sleep disturbances is higher in patients with primary acute angle-closure glaucoma and primary chronic close-angle glaucoma than healthy controls. No correlation was found between the prevalence of sleep disorders and impairment of visual field in primary chronic close-angle glaucoma patients.
