Objective: To study the origin and development from ancient Chinese m edicine literature of liver stagnation from Pre-Qin and Han period to today, according to the social and cultural background, and expound the connot ation of the liver depression from the angle of evolution, and restore plain acknow ledgement of TCM, and expand clinical thinking.Method: In the framework of Chinese history, sorting out the academic viewpoint by means of1 iterature of m ain physician a nd medical masterpiece in each perio d, by theoretical analysis, draw the outline of the its evolution. It comes down in one continuous line, or it is original and new, or it is con trary to self consistent in its own developm ent,and this has yet to be revealed.Result:1 .In Pre-Qin and Han period, based on the doctrine on yun-qi, the m anifestation of liver-qi stagnation in folk disease is the in itial and crudest understanding of the liver stagnation. Nan Jing, Classic of Questioning, which describe d the liver m eridian and syndrome through later commentary, had realized qi depression connecting with liver. The febrile disease had not intuitive recogniti on of liver stagnation, but liver stagnation appeared in later commentary and gradually reached a consensus.2.In Wei-Jin and Sui-Tang period, along with the national in tegration, prevalent monographs had not discussion of hapetic qi stagnation or liver stagnation, which was still characterized by liver qi deficiency and excess rooting in Neijing.3.In Song period, bacause of stagnation in the in ternal organs, emotions attracted disease. That em phasized the em otions was the premier pathogeny, and also laid the foundation for liver stagnation originating from emotional discomfort.4.Theory of Jin Yuan physicians was not explicit in the liver depression, but generally speaking, combined with the vari ous doctrines, scatteringly, it had took shape in the cause,in the mechanism, and in the cure method.5.In Ming period, according to five stagnation and six stagnation from Neijing, th e name, syndrome and cure of liver stagnation were put forward definitely , and curing stagnation from liver emerged on basis of the five elements theory.6.In Qing period, the liver storing blood and liver controlling dispersion theory became mainstream gradually, and the cause as well as mechanism of liver stagnation were enriched, which accelerated the ripening of the liver stagnation theory.7.From late Qing until now, with the introduction of western learning and the risk of TCM, the recognition is constantly refined, whic h is neatly illustrated by transform of the liver stagnation from the disease name to syndrome type.Conclusion:Liver stagnation was put forw ard as disease name and syndrom es differentiation, which was initiated from the stagnant wood and transfer mation. Although physicians of past generations had dif ferent opinions about it, the essence is consistent.Only transfered the do ctrine of five stagn ation to viscer a-state doctrine in the g eneral direction. Liver stagnation reflected disorder of qi activity, stagnation of qi is a leading of it,stagnation is temporary, but the situation of transformation is ne cessary, It could be syndrome reversed flow of qi,also the condition of sinking,which it’s all in a dynamic evolution.
