ObjectiveThe impaired glucose regulation is the transitory stage of develop diabetes. It is a body situation between the normal and diabetes, which is a warning sign of diabetes patients. Type 2diabetes is particularly common among the elderly. With the increasing of age and the change of life style, the level of physical activity has dropped in the elderly. Eventually, it leads to the incidence of diabetes which increases year by year. Nordic Walking is beneficial to the health of the elderly as a fashion way of fitness. This paper studied the pathogenesis of impaired glucose regulation and the effect of Nordic Walking exercise intervention on the elderly, which aimed to provide a new exercise therapy for the impaired glucose regulation and to reduce the incidence of diabetes. What is more, the research evaluated whether Nordic Walking is able to be promoted in the community as a new means of exercise in the future.MethodsTwenty-Eight women patients with impaired glucose regulation were taken the medical and physical examination. All the baseline levels blood index, body shape index and physical quality index, are similar. All the subjects were randomly assigned into two groups on average: exercise group and control group. Exercise group did moderate intensity Nordic Walking for six months, two or three times a week, and every time 30-60 minutes. It usually kept about 45 minutes every time.Subjects' daily exercise habit and daily effective steps measured by movement log and pedometer to guarantee the exercise intensity in exercise group and maintain the physical activity as usual in control group. After six months, we examined all subjects' index again. We compared the differences between exercise group before intervention and after, we observed a significant difference between exercise group and control group by the statistical method of paired t-test and independent t-test.ResultsCompared with control group, six months ago(before taking the intervention), fasting blood glucose level, postprandial 2 hours blood glucose level, glycated hemoglobin, low density lipoprotein, cholesterol and triglyceride level were all decreased(p<0.05) in exercise group. The weight of members in exercise group decreased(p<0.05) and body fat rate slightly decreased. However, bone mineral density, body muscle mass increases slightly, upper limb muscle quality has significantly increased(p<0.05). The group with intervention has higher ability than control group and before taking intervention group in 2 kilometers walking speed, step-test index. There was a significant difference(P<0.01) between exercise group and control group with record of physical activity index.ConclusionNordic walking exercise intervention can decrease fasting blood glucose level, postprandial 2hours blood glucose level, glycated hemoglobin, low density lipoprotein, cholesterol and triglyceride level. Also, it is beneficial for decreasing the body weight, improving the quality of upper limb muscles and making a good body shape. It can improve the patient's physical quality of impaired glucose regulation and their cardiopulmonary function.
