Fine roots are the most active parts of plant roots in the process of absorbing water and play an important role in finding underground resources. The ability of plants to obtain soil moisture depends on many factors. In the limited environment of water and nutrients, the biomass, the length, the specific density and the tissue density of the root, and their spatial distribution and anatomical structure will affect the ability of the root system to absorb the soil resources.Fine roots have strong plasticity, and the response of plants to soil moisture, such as soil moisture,is very different. The plasticity of root characteristics can be considered as a survival strategy or response to arid habitats. However,it is difficult to determine the mechanism of plasticity to adapt to space and temporarily change the environment. Our research on root traits and species is limited, and the key root traits related to plant growth strategy have not been well explained. In this study,7 common species of tree species in arid and barren mountains in central and southern Shandong were studied. The morphological parameters, configuration parameters and anatomical characteristics of different root order of different species were measured, and the differences and ecological manifestations of the tree species were compared and analyzed.1.Root sequence is the effective organization structure of roots, which realizes different functions through different forms of roots, and promotes the absorption efficiency of nutrients and water. It was found that root morphological characteristics(root diameter, root length, specific root length, etc.),configuration characteristics and anatomical structure were closely related to root order.2.The morphological characteristics of fine roots of different tree species were significantly different. With the increase of root order, the average diameter, surface area, volume, biomass and tissue density of fine roots became larger, and the root length and the specific root length decreased.Compared with arbor species, the root diameter and root length of shrubs are larger, and the root surface area and volume are larger than those of arbor species. The root length and tissue density of the tree species are greater.3.There were significant differences in fine root configuration among different tree species.According to the topological index, the configuration of the 7 tree species is more close to the human shaped branch pattern, which is more beneficial to the plants to absorb the water in the larger volume soil in the arid and barren hills,so as to maintain the survival and growth of the plants. The topological index of deciduous shrubs is larger than that of arbor trees. The total branch rate of root is larger than that of shrub, and the branch rate of order 2 to 1 of tree species is larger, that is,the tree species developed more 1 roots to absorb soil moisture in the arid habitats. The connection length of shrub species is large, which expands the area of soil moisture absorption.4.There are significant differences in fine root anatomical structure among different tree species. With the change of root order, the anatomical structure of fine roots also changed regularly. The secondary structure indicates that the fine root function is changed from absorption to transport, and the 1 and 2 fine roots are mainly absorbed by the absorption function, while the 4 and 5 fine roots are responsible for the transport of water. The diameter of the fine root of shrub and the diameter of the vascular column are small, and the lower root order thin root cortex is thin.It has a great advantage in the water absorption. The vascular tissue of the tree is developed, the diameter of the catheter is large, and the ability of the plant roots to transport water is strong.5.Different tree species showed different ecological adaptations in arid habitats.Fine root morphological features, smaller root diameter, larger root length, developed fine root configuration, longer root connection length, thin cortex, and developed xylem vessel are more conducive to roots to absorb water from the soil.In production practice, plants can be selected and cultivated in arid areas by cultivating plants with excellent root characteristics or according to the characteristics of roots.
