Zhejiang Province is superior in regional hydrothermal condition, have good foundation in agriculture.Various kinds of economic crops are widely planted, and meanwhile a mass of crop residue and by-product are produced every year.Full utilization of economic crop by-product in the herbivorous animal industry will be of great significance for preserving the ecological environment and progressing the sustainable development of agricultural economy. Therefore,an investigation was carried out in order to make clear to the output of crop residue and the utilize possibility was also studied. And chose typical Asparagus stem and leaves as an illustration, studied silage making, compared baled asparagus stem and leaf silage with common cellar storage. And studied its effect on productive performance and plasma biochemical indices of Southern China calf, with 15% and 30% added into daily ration.Studies show:(1)After the calculation according to the coefficient of field straws,it shows that rice straw is the most abundant byproduct reach up to 5.22 million tons per year. The Second is asparagus stem and leaf,0.81 million tons. And the others, like haulm 0.54 million tons, rape straw 0.48 million tons, corn straw 0.32 million tons, tea leaves 0.28 million tons, potato vine 0.26 million tons.Among them, asparagus stem and leaf contain 13% crude protein,40.2% NDF,26.2% ADF,it can have higher feeding value as feeds for ruminants after silage fermentation.(2)The water ratio of silage asparagus stem leaf should be controlled at about 55%,the difference of nutrition composition between baled silage and cellar storage asparagus stem and leaf is not significant.Respectively containing 9.54% and 10.0% crude protein,30.0% and 30.3% crude fiber, and ratio of wet-and-dry weight is 3.22 and 3.06.Asparagus stem and leaf silage could be used as ruminant feed.(3)Feed intake, daily gain, feed conversion ratio and various body measurements had no significant influence between experiment and control groups(P >0.05).And the plasma biochemical indices shows that,at the 4th week, the concentration of NEFA and GLU was significantly lower than the control group, short of energy material. But the difference didn’t appear at the 8th week, which means calves need 4~8 weeks to adapt the asparagus stem and leaf silage. The concentrations of BUN of experiment groups were higher than the control group at 4th week, among them, the 15% addition group reached up to the significant level(P <0.05).Itindicates that feeding asparagus stem and leaf silage do enhance the protein intake and catabolic rate.SOD of the 15% addition group was extremely significantly below the control and 30%addition group. That weakened the function of regulating blood fat, this maybe a reason caused the level of triglyceride going up.The level of GSH-PX is also rising in the experiment groups.Above all, scale of feeding baled asparagus stem and leaf silage should be controlled more than15%,less than 30%.
