Driving a plane is a complex task, pilots highly depend on the effective obtainment of visual information when flying, this requires the pilots can get the correct information from the display at the right time, and make the optimization of decision process. Studying the optimal eye movement process of the pilots can help to reveal and understand the pilots' eye movement strategies and the eye movement rules, it also can provide some theoretical guidance for improving the aircraft cockpit layout design and perfecting the pilot training tutorials. In this paper, firstly, based on collecting and sorting out the related knowledge of eye movement and the current research about the eye movement in the field of aviation, the pilots' eye movement characteristics were summarized; then we developed the optimal control model of pilots' eye movement basing on the three elements of sports consumption: time, accuracy and energy, combing the pilots' eye movement characteristics and using the optimal control theory and the dynamic model of eyes. Meanwhile we used the Pontryagin's minimum principle to solve the model and used the MATLAB to calculate and analysis the model;finally we obtained the pilots' optimal eye movement trajectory and optimal eye movement strategies. In order to validate the validation of the developed optimal control model for pilots' eye movement, we selected ten participants to complete the plane landing mission at Airbus 320 cockpit simulator, at the same time, we used the eye tracking device of FaceLAB4.0 to track the eye movement of subjects, and recorded the relative data during flight; then we analyzed the recorded data and obtained the relationship between the duration and amplitude when flew, finally we used the results of experiment to compare with the results of the pilots' optimal eye movement model. The results showed that there is a unique optimal duration for any given amplitude which minimizes the total cost of eye movement, and the eye movement trajectory is optimal. The validity of this model was verified by simulation results. This research can provide the basis for the layout of the cockpit instrument panel.
