China is a big mineral-producing country, and has a great power of annual mine producing ability. After a long time mining activities, the amount of different tailings and other mine wastes had up to a quite huge volume. The tailings facilities which build to store these wastes in different mine industries sited all over the country. These facilities'safety and stability is always a big issue. Tailings dam is the major component of the tailings pond, its stability determined the tailings pond's using and safety. Because the mechanical and seepage properties of the tailings are so complex, and the experiences and the methods of building tailings dam are so limited, the useful and reasonable methods to analysis or assess the stability of the tailings dam body have not been completely founded. Based on the study of tailings deposited regulation, the seepage flow field simulation and the stability analysis on the simple model, this paper made an assessment on the stability of the Hong Toushan tailings dam.The major works and results of this paper are as follows:(1) According to the review of upper-formed tailings dam's failed reasons and failure types, and the affections analysis on stability of the tailings dam under the upper-formed body construction and work rules, it can be concluded that the key point for the dam body's stability is the dam slope's stability. Because the upper-formed tailings dam's body are formed one up one which called'starter dam'. The dam's failure always were the slope's broken and followed tailings'spilled.(2) According to the experiments datum, we got the dam body materials'properties such as tailings components, particle size distribution, deposited regulation, physical states, mechanical and permeated properties. Based on the analysis with these datum, Since the end of the main part of the overall mineral particles smaller, and rarely compose the greater part of particles, solid exclude the impact of the tailings dam stability.(3) According to the site, and indoor penetration test data and basic physical parameters tail minerals, finite element method, use Lizheng geotechnical calculation software were analyzed and calculated water levels and flood Status bit operating condition, and its two-dimensional steady seepage analysis to calculate the saturation line.(4) Stability analysis using rigid limit equilibrium method using Lizheng geotechnical calculation software, according to the effective stress, respectively, excluding inter-slice forces "Swedish slice method" and the counter force compartmentalization "simplified Bishop Law" Situation analysis and calculation water levels and flood level of operating conditions. From the results that overall skid tailings dam is stable, but the safety margin is very small.(5) Summarized seepage stability and stability against sliding simulation results, combined with the actual situation, to find easy failure location near the dam feet and proposed to improve the program.
