Die design method based on template has the advantages of fast response, standardized management of experience so that it can make the designers focus on the functions of die structure instead of the details. Thus, this method can greatly shorten the cycle of die structure design. It is now widely used in automobile panel die design process. But an existing template modeling technology has certain limitations, causing unstable updating in die surface design, so it needs a lot of time to modify the complex structures manually. In addition, due to the complexity and huge data of an automobile panel die, it may cause invalid operations in replacing new process elements.The thesis is supported by numerical control equipment state major R&D projects(No. 2009ZX04013-031). According to the demands in the process of rapid design of automobile drawing die based on template, this paper studied the present application of templated design method, and developed the die surface design module based on CATIA platform using CATIA-CAA technology to achieve the auto-replacement of new automobile part's process elements, stable update and valid reconstitution of die surface structure base on template, providing good structure basis for subsequent die design.By studying the situation of low quality in die surface structure generation and unstable update after replacing the process elements in template, this paper analyzed the difficult points and the shortage of the existing methods during the process of replacing new elements in template, and proposed a die-face related structures' stable modeling method. This method is based on existing templates and Publication technology; it can update the die surface structure which is related with new process elements before the overall design to avoided modeling failure due to invalid update of die surface structure.In order to use this method to achieve automatic, accurate and stable die surface structure update process, this paper analyzed the basic reasons that may cause the failure of invalid update or generating undesirable structures under the automatic replace process without manual intervention, and it proposed a direction recognition algorithm of process surface and curve element. Combined with the characteristics of drawing die design, this paper proposed a new method for optimization of die structure update to improve the accuracy and stability in automatic update process of die surface structure.Finally, this die surface structure design module was integrated into Automotive Panel Interactive Drawing Die Design” system, taking eight typical automobile outer covering parts as example to verify the accuracy and stability of this module. And by compared with the traditional manual die design process, it verified the system effectiveness in improving the quality and efficiency of die design.
