In recent years, with the improvement of human awareness of environmental protection, researchers began to study on the development of new environmentally friendly gasoline additive that can not only improve the octane number and the quality of fuel but also reduce the consumption of oil to achieve the purpose of energy saving and emission reduction.Ethyl methyl carbonate(EMC)is an environmentally benign carbonic acid ester, has high oxygen content, high octane number, and low solubility in water, which is recognized as environmentally benign chemical and may be a promising gasoline additive. In this experiment, the gas chromatograph was used to study liquid-liquid equilibrium(LLE)of EMC with alcohol, water and hydrocarbon, and discussed whether EMC has the potential as a gasoline additive. In this work,we present LLE data of ternary systems of(water + methanol + EMC),(water + ethanol + EMC),(water + ethanol + octane),(water + EMC + heptane),(water + EMC + octane)and quaternary systems of(water + methanol + EMC + heptane),(water + ethanol + EMC + heptane),(water + methanol + EMC + octane),(water + ethanol + EMC + octane)at 298.15 K and ambient pressure. The distribution coefficients of various substances for quaternary systems were calculated from LLE data.In this paper, the modified and extended UNIQUAC activity coefficient models were employed to correlate the experimental LLE results. The average rmsd values of correlated results of ternary systems are 0.59 mol% and 1.16 mol%,those of quaternary systems are 1.27 mol% and 1.86 mol% for the modified and extended UNIQUAC models, respectively. The correlated results by the modified and extended UNIQUAC models were in agreement with the experimental LLE data. The consistency of the measured LLE data was ascertained by applying the Othmer-Tobias equation. The values of R2 for each case are close to unity. It indicates the good degree of reliability of the data measured in this work.
