With the advances of mining technology, large-scale mechanized mining, the using of mechanized excavation outfit in northwest China has basically formed a high-intensity, high efficiency underground mining model. Surface damage and environmental degradation has caused by high-intensity coal mining, which seriously restricts the sustainable development of the mining area. For the problem of rational and efficient exploitation of coal resources and minimizing damage to the ecological environment is a major issue of the development of coal resources.The paper uses 41 a long time remote sensing data set for LANDSAT MSS/TM/ETM+ in Shendong mining area. Using FLAASH atmospheric correction models for multi-temporal images obtains surface reflectance data, which is used to assimilate. Vegetation index is calculated, and using the discrete Fourier transform and vegetation cover degree two indicators of vegetation indices to analyze the vegetation of mining areas. The research will be important and meaningful for the coordination of the mine resources in Northwest China and environment.The paper analyzes the temporal and special variations of the Bulianta mining area and Daliuta mining area in Shendong mining area, and obtains the conclusions as follows:(1) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index from Fourier curve fitting have obvious correspondence with vegetation Phenology, vegetation index curve has 12 calendar month each year, a single peak, corresponding to the one-mature per year, and the most of the maximum value in August, some in July, the lowest value in January or February. These are consistent with the seasonal variation of the study area vegetation. The study result also shows that the vegetation index data for discrete fitting application of the method is reasonable.(2) Using the method of timing analysis and vegetation coverage degree to characterize t vegetation index from the whole, the results obtained are consistent with both and the impact on vegetation of the development and exploitation of mines area has fluctuations, but on the whole, it has no effect on the vegetation, or even turn to be better. Compared with the previous mining, its vegetation cover is in an increasing trend, the average vegetation coverage degree of Bulianta coalfield and Daliuta coalfield increase by 22.21%and 31.04% respectively. This also shows that the increased investment for mine on the ecological environment governance and management of targeted mining method is effective.
