Subtropical zone in China is the most concentrated area of cities.Lakes are important parts in urban ecosystem. However, with the rapid development of economy in subtropical regions, eutrophication occurredwidespreadin urban lakes and led to the lake ecosystem destruction. In this study, phytoplankton species composition characteristics and water quality of 10 lakes in Wuhan city were investigated. The eutrophication situationof the lakes was evaluated and the correlation between phytoplankton community structure and environmental factors was analyzed. The main results are as follows.(1)All of the lakes investigated in Wuhan City were eutrophic, and theorganic matters were the main pollutants.(2)Phytoplankton belonging to chlorophyta,cyanophyta,bacillariophyta,cryptop-hyta,euglenophyta,pyrroptataand xanthophyta were identified in the lakes.Chlorophyta showed the greatest species diversity and all of the dominant speciesbelongs to chlorophyta.(3)Total phosphorus(TP)is the main environmental factor affecting phytoplankton distribution in the lakes of Wuhan City.
