The Upgrading Process Of Chinese Textile And Garment Industry Examined By Global Value Chain Model

Textile and garment industry is one of the most globalized industries in the world; it is also the industry in which developing countries are very deeply involved. This research paper aims to examine different pathways of Chinese T&G industrial upgrading process after the phase-out of Multi fiber arrangement in 2005, as well as this upgrading process’ implications on the global T&G value chain network. To do so, this research paper will contain 2 pillars: the first pillar is to identify different pathways of Chinese T&G industrial upgrading process through empirical evidence; the second pillar is to analyze how the Chinese T&G industrial upgrading process could reshape the global T&G value chain network. The methodology used in this research paper will be a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methodology. This research paper will contain five chapters. The first chapter includes a general introduction of the context and the importance of this research topic, the literature review, and methodologies applied, as well as the advantages and the shortcomings of the research approach. The second part introduces the Global value chain model and sets up the theoretical framework of the analysis in the coming chapters. The third chapter analyses the difficulties and challenges encountered by Chinese T&G industry and thus explains the necessity of the upgrading process. The fourth and the fifth chapter are the core contents of this paper. Chapter 3 conducts an empirical study on upgrading paths of Chinese T&G industry, while Chapter 4 examines the implication of this upgrading process on regional and global network. Chapter 5 summarizes the entire paper and gives advices to Chinese companies and policy makers involved.
