China is an agricultural country which has the largest population in the world.Nowadays, with the rapid growth of population and economy, the contradictionbetween natural resources and population has become increasingly acute, leading to arange of serious problems, such as sharp decrease and increasing degradation ofarable land. It is meaningful to study on the monitoring system of arable land qualitygrade which is suitable to China’s situation incorporating the results of AgriculturalLand Classification, taking the concepts and methods of the monitoring systemestablishment, at home and abroad. It could help boost the progress of quantity, quality and ecology protection of arable land, enhance the quality management ofarable land, and promote the protection and construction of the basic farmland. In this paper, based on previous researches and related projects, taking thequality of arable land protection as a guide, the former Agricultural LandClassification indicators were analyzed. Based on the characteristics and drawbacks ofthe indicaor selection and related theory, the indicator system of arable land qualitygrade monitoring was established. Then quantitystatistics were used in selecting theminimum data set.The factors of arable land quality were discussed, which include natural factorsthat reflect the background of the arable land conditions, and human activities factorsthat reflect human activities’ influence on land use and use level of arable land impact. And the quality change situations of arable land were categorized. District of Beijingas an example, the quality change situations of arable land was analys, and the drivingfactors were identified. In this paper, the Agricultural Land Classification indicators were analyzed. It isfound that in the actual work of grading, there are some inappropriate gradingindicators selected by the provinces, such as the degree of soil erosion, basic fertility, soil type, total nitrogen content, the degree of forest shelter belts, annual precipitationand hydrothermal fit degree. In addition, the index area inconsistencies, gradingindicators differences would affect the accuracy of the classification results and theregional comparability among different regions. For satisfying the needs of indicatorsystem of arable land quality grade monitoring and agricultural land classificationresult update, based on the Agricultural Land Classification result and regioncharacters, the indicator system of arable land quality grade monitoring for12first level regions of standard farming systems were established. Finally, the evaluation index system of reference commonly used indicatorevaluation of the effectiveness analysis, monitoring indicators proposed county scaleoptimization method, and selected two typical counties empirical research. The resultsshow that the index can effectively replace the optimization of other indicatorsreflect the quality of arable land.
