With the rapid modernization of current technologies, we need to advance existing systems. This thesis focus on development of existing industrial Ethernet communication protocol ’Modbus’, commonly used for Machine-to-Machine communications, for performance improvement by adding Time-driven and Event-driven mechanisms. We will regard this new development as ’Modbus-extended’ protocol. To perform this expansion, we have developed hardware prototype for testing the new mechanisms and recording respective response times. These response times arc compared to response time of existing Modbus protocol to predict scope of development, using both TCP/IP and Real-time architectures. After performing extensive experiments and analysis, we conclude that Modbus-extended protocol reduces response time and increases serving capacity of Master node by reducing query generation for same node and for same information repeatedly. This development is backward compatible and does not require any hardware upgrade.
