With the growing popularity and widely use of the Internet, more and more industries began to develop their business in the direction of information, however, as all the data is becoming information and stored, transmitted as well as processed through the internet, it is more and more rigorous to protect them from sophisticated security threats. Especially for those who demands higher security requirements such as government agencies, military units, large enterprises and research institutes, they mustn’t connect to the external unsafe networks with sensitive data, so there is a need to isolate their inner network from external networks. Netgap is an ideal solution for such occasion with its distinctive characteristics of physical isolation and data exchange capabilities.However, given the characteristics of the netgap, it is always the only connecting bridge between networks with different security levels and is responsible for the process of all the data through the network, which can easily become a bottleneck in the whole system. Once the netgap forms a single point of failures(SPOFs), it will have great effect on the stability of network and the continuity of the business, and even lead to the paralysis of the entire system, which is insufferable to a lot of business and may cause enterprises loss. Therefore, the research and implementation of high availability netgap has important theoretical and practical value.This paper first shows an improvement on an existing high-availability netgap protocol, and proposes a hot-standby netgap system scheme. Secondly, after learning the existing heartbeat mechanisms, the paper designs a heartbeat detection model taking consideration of unique characteristics of netgap, which suits the scheme well. This heartbeat model finds a balance of the contradiction among the heart rate, fault detection delay and false detection rate and can be widely used in the hot-standby system based on the netgap. Finally, the paper shows the design and implementation of a hot-standby system for a video conference system based on the netgap, it also gives the test of system function and system performance. After test, the hot-standby system can meet the requirements of the parent system and provide high availability service for the video conference system, thus enhancing the competitiveness of the netgap video conference system in the similar products, and the system has been put into use.
