With the continuous development of media-streaming technology, wireless-networking technology and video-compression technology, video-surveillance systems are used more and more widely. Nowadays, the Android system, based on Linux, has become very popular and stable, and it has also been developed significantly in the area of video surveillance. This article presents a WiFi-based wireless and remotely-controlled video-surveillance system, operating on Android smart phones. In order to ensure an effective communication between the client and the monitoring unit, this video-surveillance system requires that the smart phone being used to capture footage and the monitor must be in the same WiFi network, being able to active socket communication based on IP address and ports. The system takes advantage of Android smart phones’ cameras to capture live footage, a nd constantly sends the image information gathered to the PC client with the specified IP address and port through the WIFI network; the image information will instantly be received, processed and then played at the PC client, so the purpose of monitoring will be achieved. The system gathers the real-time image information captured by the Android smart phone’s camera using the reloading function of on preview frame through the interface of camera preview call back, then sends the image information to the PC client using socket communication. The program used in the PC client, written in Java, monitors specified ports and processes the image information following pre-written orders after receiving such information from the smart phone, then the restored footage information will be sent to the image panel to be displayed. In this system, there is a function allowing users to save any image or footage information at any time into the specified folder by clicking certain control button in order to review in the future. The real-time video surveillance can be achieved by adopting these fundamental operating procedures.
