Microwave filters, the most common and basic application, is to cut-off the unwanted frequency signals, while let the required ones successfully pass through. In modern microwave circuit system, many designs’ core problem is on the microwave filter, and it has become an inevitable problem in microwave circuit design.With the advance of electronic technology, especially in a great leap in the field of communication, that the communication frequency resource comes more and more short, and microwave frequency is relatively crowded, which brings forward higher demand on the filter’s performance. Low passband insertion loss, high stopband rejection, high power capacity, broadband application, and far parasitic passband, etc. are the main basic technical indicators; but low cost, small size and rapid design method and shortening design cycle have also become the key technical requirements.With the highly developed computer today, there’s a huge leap both in numerical calculation speed and accuracy. Therefore, a large number of excellent numerical calculation softwares and microwave EDA tools have emerged; Matlab and HFSS are the best to represent the highest level in their respective fields. The traditional, manual and testing microwave filter design methods, they are unpractical neither in consideration of cost nor calculation accuracy and depth. So it requires finding more efficient and accurate design methods, and software’s automated design will be the best choice.For these reasons, to take advantage of these two softwares at the same time, it will be a breakthrough on shortening filter’s simulation design cycle. This paper applies HFSS-Matlab-API script program to complete the terminal short circuit type of interdigital filter design, with a GUI interface added to make into fully functional filter-aided design software. Effectively it makes good use of Matlab’s powerful numerical calculation and modeling capabilities, as well it combines HFSS-three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation software’s accurate simulation capability. This is not only an application of numerical calculation and modeling methodology, but also a timeliness application of filter design and optimization.In the end of this paper, some convincing application examples are listed to show the software’s practicability. Meanwhile outside the paper, we have done lots of design applications so to better provide the scope of this software application.
