Coupled-cavity TWT still occupy an important position in the field of communication and radar system. Its power, bandwidth, gain and efficiency directly determine the performance of the system.But now it is difficult to improve the power, bandwidth, gain, efficiency and nonlinear characteristics of microwave tubes further using the traditional methods and experience. The precision software of CAD for microwave tube has become the main means to improve performance. Recently, the accuracy, speed and computing power of CAD modeling and simulation software for microwave tube has been significantly improved. In the past, each module was simulated separately. Now the trend of microwave tube CAD technology has extended fully to integrated system. The entire device can be simulated in an integrated system. The data gotten from computer simulation can be applied to assembly of tube successfully. Thus the time and expense of hardware experiment is saved.This subject comes from a major special TWT. In response to these problems, on the basis of analysis of the theoretical and technical principles in depth, improving the efficiency of coupled-cavity TWT and broadening the bandwidth is discussed and researched detailed from two ways of the simulation and experimental validation in this paper. The main content of this paper is followed:1. Analysis method of dispersion characteristics and coupling impedance of coupled-cavity TWT is described detailed in this paper.2. From the three aspects of the theoretical analysis, the way of improving the efficiency of electronic(such as using technology of dispersion compensation, the number of Circuit Sever, selecting of βL for the operating point values, selecting fill factor of the electron beam in the channel and phase velocity taper), the impact of absorption button on stability and efficiency of TWT, the cooling way of High Average Power is present. The research scheme is developed against these factors by computing with CAD software, and verified by cold-test and dispensing tube. Then the pros and cons of the various research scheme is drawn by discussing and analyzing the data gotten. Based on the comprehensive analysis to the above conclusions, the major topics of special TWT RF system design is developed, and test parameters qualified are given.
