Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar(ISAR) and Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) apply to the same fundamental principles, which base on wideband signal to obtain high range resolution and relative motion between radar and target to obtain high azimuth resolution, so we can obtain high resolution 2-D ISAR imaging. ISAR is primarily focused on non-cooperative targets, such as aircraft, missiles, ships, satellites and other small non-cooperative target. ISAR has the advantage of all-weather, all-aerospace etc., so ISAR is broadly applied to extract target feature and motion information. ISAR is highly valuable for battlefield reconnaissance and defense, target identification, observations of satellite and celestial. This paper make a detailed research on the ISAR imaging algorithms, including: the principle of ISAR, analysis of target’s echo signal model, technology of motion compensation, focus algorithms of ISAR imaging in azimuth etc., besides this paper focuses on verifying the validity of original and improved algorithms by combination of measured echo data in field of engineering applications. The main contents are as following:(1) Introducing the basic ideal of ISAR, such as research background, research significance and situation in China and abroad.(2) Modeling and analysis of ISAR echo signal, describing the ISAR principle of the rotation target, the technology of motion compensation, reconstruction algorithms of ISAR in azimuth.(3) Making a detailed research on phase compensation and time-frequency technology, then present improved algorithms. To verify the validity of algorithms, simulation is presented by using point target.(4) Studying and simulation on midcourse missile and maneuvering targets, and verifying the feasibility of presented algorithms based on measured data. Finally, we summarize the difference between the aircraft and missile target in imaging methods.
