Phased array radar has high performances and multi-functional features. Therefore, it has become an important aspect of the development of modern radar technology. Phased array radar utilizes microseconds to form and locate radar beams, forming hundreds of beams per second. These radar beams attempt to track and search for targets; at the same time, it deals with echoes received by antenna so that the radar can work for multiple targets simultaneously at different modes. Since the radar system works at different modes, the consumptions of the radar resources vary according to these modes. Accordingly, the methods of efficiently distributing and using these resources have an essential impact on the potential of the phased array radar. This thesis discusses the resource optimization and resource management at multi-target tracking mode of the phased array radar. In what follows are main topics of this thesis:1. The thesis studies a resource optimization algorithm for multi-target tracking. When the phased array radar tracks multi-target, it works at time-sharing multi-beam mode. Therefore, the resource optimization mainly refers to the optimal allocation of target illuminating time. In order to improve the tracking performance, we regarded the estimation of the target’s status as advanced information, based on which the illuminating time for each target was adjusted. This problem can be regarded as an optimization problem with the optimization variable as a target illuminating time. With relevant resolutions, the illuminating time for each target can be obtained. The simulation validated the improvement of this algorithm’s accuracy of target tracking.2. The thesis studies resource management of multi-target tracking modes. Namely, how to design an efficient schedule of phased array radar tracking tasks between multiple beams and the search task. In other words, the phased array radar determines working modes in next period about whether it works under the mode of searching or tracking. In the tracking mode, the identification of the specific target is needed.Information theory and covariance control are two methods to solve this problem,. This thesis combines these two methods. In this case, the radar can track the specific targets according to their expected tracking accuracy and the other targets according to their mobility to alleviate the disadvantages caused by using one of the two methods only. The expected tracking accuracy is set according to the threat degree of targets. In terms of the dynamic environmental changes, the threat degree of the targets are determined by arrangement-benefit methods through authentic knowledge and advanced information of the targets’ characteristics from the radar echo. The simulated experiments effectively proved the results of the corresponding decisions in accordance with human thinking patterns.
