In this thesis, a LCD TV package was investigated to study the effects of foam structure on cushion properties, using both computer simulation which is high-efficient, convenient and low-cost, and accurate and reliable traditional physical experiments.With the aid of the finite element software ANSYS Workbench to simulate LCD TV package drop tests of bottom face and side edge. Velocity, acceleration, stress, strain and other physical quantities of all package components were obtained during the dropping. Special issues needing extra attention during numerical simulation are given in detail for the processes of geometrical model repairmen, connection relationship, grid meshing, result output. The effect of energy absorption, release and transimsion between TV, cushion foam and carton on TV was investigated by using energy method, namely comparing the kinetic energy and elastic potential energy change in different package components.The best structure in cushion performance was chosen by comparing the velocity, maximum acceleration, stored energy, stress and strain of TV during the fall with different foam structure, which was designed according to the result of numerical simulation. Compared with the original foam structure, the improved structure reduce the maximum acceleration of TV in the drop impact, lower the maximum strain of the back cover, as well as saves material costs by reducing foam volume.Drop experiments with original and improved foam structure were carried out to obtain and compare the acceleration curve in different positions of TV. Similar to the simulation result, using the improved foam structure, TV has a lower maximum acceleration during the drop impact, suggesting the efficiency of the improvement. The data obtained from numerical simulation and experiment showed that these two methods is consistent, verify the reliability of the simulation technique.
