Er-doped silicate glass and fibers have applications in many fields, especially as the keycomponents in fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers. They have high reliability, high beam quality,low loss and small volume, light weight, resistance to electromagnetic interference and otheradvantages when compared with traditional active device. However, optical fiber deviceswill be exposed to radiation when used in some special environments such as space andnuclear, which would produce certain radiation injury and affect the optical properties offiber optic components. So, improving the radiation resistance of fiber optic components hasbeen becoming the hot research topic.The radiation resistance of Er-doped glasses and fibers under Co60Gamma-rayirradiation are discussed in this thesis. First, a series of Er/Ce co-doped silicate glass andvarious of Er/Ce co-doped boron silicate glass under certain concentration ratio are preparedby the melt-quenching method. The absorption spectra, fluorescence intensity, up-conversionspectra of Er/Ce co-doped glasses before and after irradiation are measured and analyzed indetails. The results show that the radiation induced absorption (RIA) of the silicate glassescan be suppressed due to the introduction of Ce ions. The fluorescence intensity and lifetimeof Er/Ce co-doped glasses have no apparent change after irradiation. The existence of the Ceions can inhibit the formation of the color centers in the glass. The radiation resistance isbest while the Er/Ce concentration ratio is2:1in the three different ratio.The absorption loss and gain of Er-doped fiber and Er/Ce co-doped fibers under differentdoses Gamma ray irradiation are investigated. The absorption loss of the sample fibersbefore and after irradiation are measured by PK2500. The experimental results show that1)the absorption loss of Er/Ce co-doped fiber is better than the single Er-doped fiber, theabsorption peak of Er/Ce co-doped at980nm is heighten compared with single Er-dopedfibers.2) Er-doped fiber amplifier output power decrease a lot after irradiation255Gy whileEr/Ce co-doped fiber in irradiation dose500Gy can also detect the amplifier output power,and the best length of the fiber for amplifier is18m.
