The Long-term Evolution Plan of the next generation Mobile Communication, which was consisted by two projects, namely the Long Term Evolution project and the System Architecture Evolution project, was formulated in2004. The LTE project was aimed at the Wireless communication, while the SAE project was aimed at the Core Network. S-GW was a user plane gateway in the core network architecture defined by SAE, whose main functions included session management, packet routing and forwarding, QoS controlling, accounting for charging, downlink packet buffering and lawful interception.Implementation technology of S-GW was researched in this thesis, and three key functions were concentrated upon, which were session management, packet routing and forwarding and QoS controlling. Firstly, the development history of S-GW was reviewed. Secondly, system architecture, networking and workflow were discussed. Thirdly, the requirements and technical difficulties of S-GW implementation were analysed, followed by designs of S-GW function modules and the implementation of S-GW prototype system which provided main functions defined in3GPP standards. Finaly, testing methods, procedures and results of the S-GW prototype system were introduced, and it is demonstrated that this prototype system was compliance with the3GPP definitions. As to the significance, the prototype system can play a role in S-GW development and simulations.
