In recent years, WLAN has enjoyed a rapid development in the practical application. However, owing to its limited coverage of WLAN access point (AP), more multiple cable access points needs configuring so as to provide wireless coverage in larger areas, which increases the construction costs. Wireless Mesh Network is a new type of distributed broadband wireless network with high capacity and speed. And it is able to connect to a wired network via the multi-hop wireless way. All points in the network can send and receive and relay data. It is characterized by ad hoc network, self-managing and self-healing and supports point-to-multipoint or multi-point-to-multipoint data transmission.Wireless Mesh Network technology has an irreplaceable superiority of development on intellectualized campus and it will be applied widely. At present wireless network technology is in a rapid development stage. With the continuous emerging of new technologies, new standards, and new products, how to take advantage of the rapid development of wireless network technology, to take full use of its characteristics, and to produce the advantage are the current focuses of the study of intellectualized campus. By doing these, intellectualized environment, resources, and activities can be realized and accordingly the level and quality of school teaching, scientific research, management, and services will be improved.Based on certain college’s needs of wireless network on its new campus, the thesis brings forward a new program that is to network the campus wireless network with the wireless mesh network technology. The thesis makes a profound study on the planning and design of campus wireless Mesh network through the plan design of certain college’s wireless Mesh network building in its new campus. The main parts are as follows:(1) on the basis of application needs of the campus wireless network, IEEE802.11technology and wireless Mesh Network technology that are widely applied on campus are discussed and the topologies of traditional wireless LAN and wireless mesh are emphatically studied and compared;(2) in accordance with practical application requirements and the current network technology development, wireless LAN network planning and its technology are examined. The wireless mesh network topology suitable for certain college’s new campus as well as objective function and methods to optimize large-scale wireless LAN system are also proposed;(3) the thesis analyzes the functional requirements of the design project, completes the system planning, clears the objectives and principles of the wireless network system construction, and determines the wireless mesh network structure adopted in the building of the wireless network on the new campus;(4)the planning and networking design of the campus wireless network and the wireless network transmission and access design are accomplished. Video surveillance, communications, management and billing solutions based on wireless mesh are completed. This thesis introduces the development, protocol standards and key technologies of the WLAN Mesh and analyzes the structure and characteristics of WLAN Mesh network. Networking research is conducted in the typical application scenarios such as schools, hospitals, and emergency communications. And the focus of the research lies in the typical technical problem that the applications of wireless mesh networking technology in the "last-kilometer" wireless coverage. It analyzes the scene characteristics and the network needs. Network planning and design issues like node set, frequency planning, and equipment selection are conducted. The thesis also describes the basic principles of NS-2network simulator. By adding its support for multi-channel multi-interface (MCMI) so as to build a multi-channel multi-interface simulation platform, functions of NS-2are extended. The platform is suitable for the scene simulation study which is of heavy network needs, numerous obstructions, and intensively MeshAP distribution. The platform can reduce latency and packet loss rate, increase the throughput, and effectively improve network performance.
