With rapid economic development and increase of people’s living standards, the per capita car ownership increased rapidly, and the role vehicle plays in people’s lives has became more and more important, at the same time, road traffic safety and congestion problems are growing. In order to solve these problems, the concept of intelligent transportation system has been proposed, with the hope of finding ways to solve the problem under the aid of advanced information and communication technology. The reality-based demand was put forth to get a positive re-sponse from both the industry and academia. And as an important part of intelligent transportation system, vehicular ad hoc networks have become a hot spot in recent years.And how to create appropriate network tech-nology standards, so that it can be applied to different real-world scena-rios to solve the traffic congestion, safety warning, complete the informa-tion exchanged between cars and other issues have become a major re-search direction.Routing protocol is one of the hot research areas of VANET. This is because the vehicular ad hoc networks differ a lot from traditional mobile ad hoc networks. VANET is characterized with fast moving network, dramatic network topology changes, vary short survival time of network links between nodes, these factors cause the problem that the existing routing protocols to vehicular do not suit ad hoc networks well, thus routing protocol design has become a huge challenge in VANET standar-dization. Up to now, a lot research work has been taken for the VANET routing protocol.Based on other studies, this paper mainly deals with communication effectiveness in the urban scene of VANET routing pro-tocol,and focus on improving performances of routing protocol under the urban scene.Starting with performance differences of GPSR routing protocol un-der the highway and city scenes, and then based on the analysis the urban scene model is built. Then obstacles of the urban scene is analyze and as well the extension in the simulation platform of obstacles judgement al-gorithm. On this basis, combined with location-based GPSR routing pro-tocol, a new routing protocol in urban scene is proposed, under the name of IGPSR.Then the algorithm was specificly designed and implemented. Finally, the simulation work for improved routing algorithm and the original GPSR routing protocol is taken, and as it turns out the expected results has been achieved.
