:Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is a network with multimedia devices such as cameras and microphones, and capable to perceive and process still images, audio, video and other multimedia information. As a new and emerging type of sensor networks, wireless multimedia sensor networks have received the immediate and significant attention of the research community and industry. Coverage problem is one of the major problems in research of WMSN. Recently, the research in the coverage problem already has a lot of achievements, but most of the research is based on the omni-directional sensing model. With the appearance of novel video sensor networks, their distinct characteristics with directional sensing ability and a large amount of image/video data, make that many methods for conventional sensor networks are not suitable for multimedia sensor networks. Thus, wireless multimedia sensor networks demand a series of innovative solutions, especially for coverage control.Based on the directional sensing model, the thesis does a research on the area coverage problem for sensor networks with still sensing nodes and with mobile sensing nodes. As for the still multimedia sensor networks, first, we divide the whole sensor into several sub-areas to decrease the time complexity of algorithm and quicken the area coverage-enhancing process. Then, we propose a centralized area coverage-enhancing algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm; As for the mobile multimedia sensor networks, we proposed a particle swarm optimization based distributed area coverage-enhancing algorithm. Each node searches the best location in a limited region and rotates to the best orientation to effectively cover the most area and make moving distance as short as possible. Finally, simulation results verify the proposed algorithm is feasible and effective.
