The retina is located in the forefront of the visual system. Its main physiological function contains extraction of image edges, motion information processing of the target, and encodes the input signal. Physical mechanism and the relationship of the mechanism between the various functions is an urgent problem worthy of study. This paper studies the encoding mechanism of image edge extraction channel, to explore the functional relationship between edge extraction and image coding. Provide a reference for modeling retinal visual signal processing in the full sense.Firstly, this paper on the base of pointing out the ideas and principles of retinal coding (economical, streamlined and efficient, minimum redundancy), tease out common7forms of visual encoding, and summarizes the characteristics of their respective coding. Secondly, analyses the physiological mechanisms of retinal information processing, establish a model of retinal target edge detection and contour extraction, including topological structure of the retina, spatial and temporal characteristics of the retinal cells and its analysis. At last, this paper studies the encoding mechanism of the visual pathway of retinal edge detection. It contains its encoding ways and strategies of photoreceptor, horizontal cells, bipolar cells and ganglion cells. By means of series of experiments, this paper analyses the role of retinal and layers of cells in the retina of the physiological functions of edge detection, and get the relationship between retinal encoding mechanism and the role, gives the conclusions that the edge detection and extraction performance and coding efficiency exists consistency.
